PIR insulation board – uses, selection and installation
PIR board in practice: when to choose, what to check in the technical data sheet, how to avoid layering errors and costly corrections.
In brief
PIR board is a material that makes sense primarily for roofs, attics, terraces, walls, floors and places where high insulation with a smaller layer thickness is important. Do not automatically choose it for places without fire and UV protection, cuts without bridge control, applications incompatible with the cladding and damp details without proper vapor barrier.
The most important things in insulation are: the function of the layer, the place in the system, compatibility with the substrate, the required thickness, the tightness of the details and the parameters from the technical data sheet. If the manufacturer does not specify a specific application, treat it as no data.
What is
PIR board is a rigid thermal insulation board with a polyisocyanurate core, chosen where low lambda and limited insulation thickness are important. In practice, it is not "any insulation", but a specific layer with a specific function: against water, moisture, steam, noise, heat loss or work of the detail.
This card helps distinguish the material from the application. Thanks to this, we do not turn the subcategory into guides such as "bathroom insulation", but describe real products that can be selected, purchased, used and compared.
For whom and where to use
Choose a PIR board when the working conditions correspond to the intended use of the product: roofs, attics, terraces, walls, floors and places where high insulation with a smaller layer thickness is important. The material should match the substrate, subsequent layers, humidity, temperature, loads and finishing method.
For the investor, the most important thing is not whether the product is "good", but whether it is good in a specific arrangement: under tiles, under panels, in a partition, on a balcony, in a bathroom or next to a heated floor.
When not to choose
Do not choose this material for areas without fire and UV protection, cutting without bridging control, applications incompatible with cladding and damp details without proper vapor barrier. Also, do not use it as a substitute for the design of layers, slopes, expansion joints, ventilation, subfloor repairs or system details.
Insulation is often a layer that is not visible after the work is completed. An error at this stage comes out late and costs more than the additional payment for the correct material.
Key parameters
| Parameter | What to check | Why is it important |
|---|---|---|
| Lambda λ | Thermal conductivity coefficient. The lower it is, the better the insulation at the same thickness. | Do not compare the price per m² without lambda, thickness and thermal resistance R. |
| Thermal resistance R | Value resulting from lambda and layer thickness. The larger the better for reducing heat loss. | A thin layer of good material may still be too weak if the project requires a specific R. |
| Compressive strength | Especially important in floors, terraces, flat roofs and under underfloor heating. | Too soft material may work under load, bend and destroy subsequent layers. |
| Reaction to fire | Reaction to fire class and required covering of the material in the partition. | Wool and plastics have different fire behavior; one must not guess without classification. |
| Moisture and diffusion | Absorption, diffusion resistance, the need for vapor barrier and the possibility of the partition drying out. | A poorly selected system may trap moisture in the partition or reduce its parameters insulation. |
How to choose
First name the function: water, moisture, steam, sound, heat, pressure or sealing detail. Only then should you select a PIR board for a specific substrate and layer system.
Check the technical data sheet for minimum thickness, consumption, drying time, load class, lambda, Sd, strength, compatibility with the adhesive, tile, panels or the next layer. Lack of information does not constitute consent.
Practical applications
| Place | How to use | What to watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Walls and facades | Choose lambda, thickness, fire, connectors and system facade. | Do not mix random layers without system compatibility. |
| Floors and coverings | Check compressive strength, moisture and thermal resistance. | Too soft insulation may damage the floor. |
| Attic and roof | What matters is the continuity of the layer, water vapor, tightness and fire protection. | Bridges and leaky vapor barrier spoil the effect. |
| Details | Cut tightly and fill the gaps according to the system. | The gaps act as bridges thermal. |
Comparison with alternatives
| Alternative | When it makes sense | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid foil | Simple wet zones for indoor tiles. | Not always suitable onto a balcony, terrace or standing water. |
| Mat / tape / corner | Details, corners, drains and working areas. | Must be embedded in a compatible system. |
| Wool / EPS / PIR / XPS | Thermal, acoustic or floor insulation. | Requires the selection of lambda, thickness, fire, moisture and loads. |
| Vapour-barrier foil / membrane | Control of water vapor and drying of the partition. | Error of the installation side or leaking joints can destroy the system. |
Featured product segments
- Economic: reasonable for simple layers and low risk, but only if the parameters are sufficient.
- Good standard: the best choice for most renovations of apartments, bathrooms, floors and partitions.
- Premium/specialized: needed for balconies, terraces, underfloor heating, wet areas, heavy loads, high insulation or difficult details.
How to use and apply
The substrate must be load-bearing, clean and prepared in accordance with the technical data sheet. When waterproofing, control the layer thickness, details and drying time. When using thermal or acoustic insulation, pay attention to continuity, cuts, bridges, loads and the order of layers.
Do not shorten technological breaks. If the material requires tapes, corners, overlaps, gluing or additional foil, consider it part of the system, not an optional add-on.
What to avoid
- Do not interchange waterproofing, thermal insulation, vapor barriers and sound insulation with each other just because they are all called insulation.
- Do not ignore details: corners, pipe penetrations, overlaps, drains, expansion joints and edges.
- Do not use the material on weak, wet, dusty or poorly profiled surface.
- Do not compare products only by price per m² without parameters and thickness.
- Do not assume compatibility with tiles, glue, panels, heating or facade layer without manufacturer's documentation.
Common errors
- Selection of material based on the marketing name, not on the parameters and functions of the layer.
- Too thin waterproofing layer or no consumption control per m².
- No tapes, corners and cuffs in places with work or installation transitions.
- Thermal bridges by inaccurate cuts and gaps between the boards.
- Replacing the vapor barrier with a vapor-permeable membrane.
- Laying the next layer before the material dries or hardens.
Cost and budget impact
The PIR board affects the budget not only with the price of the product. What matters is the preparation of the substrate, systemic additives, the number of layers, thickness, waste, drying time and the risk of demolition in the event of an error.
In insulation, the apparent savings are particularly risky because the layer is difficult to access after the work is completed. The most expensive fix is the one that requires removing tiles, panels, insulation or building.
Frequently asked questions
Is the PIR board always needed?
Not always. It is needed when a specific partition, room or layer system requires this function: protection against water, steam, noise, heat loss or work of a detail.
When to choose PIR board?
Select this material when the technical data sheet confirms compatibility with the substrate, subsequent layers, water load, temperature, humidity and expected use.
When can a pir board be an error?
It is a mistake to use it as a replacement for another insulating layer, on a poorly prepared substrate or in a place that is not allowed by the manufacturer in the technical data sheet.
Can system items be skipped?
Not worth it. Tapes, corners, cuffs, laps, adhesives, foils and primers are often part of the performance of insulation rather than a cosmetic addition.
Is it worth paying extra for better insulation?
It is worth it when the correction would be expensive: in the bathroom, balcony, terrace, under the floor, in insulation or underfloor heating. Savings on the hidden layer can be apparent.
